Rassie Erasmus has offered a candid explanation for several of his selections for Saturday's match against the Barbarians, including a family angle that drew a rare moment of humour from the Springbok coach.
Andre-Hugo Venter, who is in a relationship with Erasmus' daughter Nikki, earns a start at hooker, with Erasmus joking that leaving him out was never really an option. "If we don't give Andre-Hugo and JJ Kotze a chance, first of all, JJ's dad will be very upset and then Andre-Hugo's girlfriend will be really upset with me," he said.
Beyond the levity, there is a clear selection logic at work. With Johan Grobbelaar, Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Marco van Staden all returning from the Bulls, plus Malcolm Marx available, Erasmus is managing a crowded hooker stocks. Marx is fit but will get his opportunity elsewhere, with the Barbarians fixture used to give Venter and Kotze game time ahead of a demanding Test window. Marnus van der Merwe remains sidelined with a long-term injury.
Erasmus framed the match explicitly as a preparation tool for the England series two weeks later, aimed at getting players back into rhythm after six months without game time together.
In the SA 'A' side named simultaneously to face Zimbabwe, Lukhanyo Am is the standout inclusion in an otherwise youthful backline. Erasmus confirmed the coaching staff want to develop Am as a 12, though acknowledged he is still working his way back to full sharpness following knee surgery and a rehabilitation stint in Japan. "I don't think he's back to where he was when he was at his peak, but this can certainly be the first step," Erasmus said.
