Jayden Nell is set for a fourth consecutive HSBC SVNS World Championship tournament appearance this weekend in Bordeaux, having made the most of his long-awaited breakthrough into top-flight sevens rugby in 2026.
The 22-year-old former Hoërskool Durbanville back joined the Blitzbok setup in 2023 but was repeatedly sidelined by injury, managing only two outings for the Springbok Sevens 'A' side — at the Rugby Africa Sevens Cup in Mauritius in 2024 and 2025 — before finally getting his chance this season. Playing as a forward despite his fifteens background as an outside back, Nell scored his first Blitzbok try against Spain in last weekend's quarterfinal in Valladolid, though the tight nature of that late rally meant the milestone passed without the usual fanfare.
"Only when we watched the review, I realised along with most of the other guys that it was my first try, so I asked them to please celebrate with me whenever I score my second," Nell said.
He debuted in New York, where South Africa claimed their fourth title in six tournaments, and reflects on a debut season that has exceeded expectations. "It did feel a bit surreal in the beginning, and I am still pinching myself at times, but then, I have been around the guys for a while now, so it was just a matter of doing what the coaches expect of you and doing your bit."
South Africa lead the SVNS World Championship standings with one tournament remaining, and Nell's message ahead of the Bordeaux event is straightforward: "We know what to do and it all boils down to how we play together as a team."
The squad received a boost this week with Donavan Don returning to the group after Dewald Human was ruled out with a knee injury sustained in Spain. Don, who was part of the Hong Kong-winning squad and has featured in six tournaments this season, restores the squad to 14 players. Coach Philip Snyman will name his 13-man tournament group on Thursday.
South Africa open their Pool A campaign against Great Britain on Friday at 15h06, then face Kenya at 20h36, before closing the pool stage against Fiji on Saturday at 11h06. All matches are live on SuperSport.
