Jayden Nell heads into this weekend's HSBC SVNS tournament in Bordeaux on the back of three consecutive appearances in his debut international season, with the Blitzboks carrying the series lead into the final event.

The 22-year-old joined the Springbok Sevens programme straight from Hoërskool Durbanville in 2023, but injuries restricted him to two outings for the Sevens 'A' side — at the Rugby Africa Sevens Cup in Mauritius in 2024 and 2025 — before he finally broke into the senior touring squad in 2026. South Africa won four of their first six tournaments this season, including the New York title where Nell made his debut.

His profile rose further in Valladolid last weekend when he scored his first Blitzbok try in a tense quarter-final comeback against Spain, though the urgency of the moment meant the milestone went largely unnoticed in real time. "Only when we watched the review did I realise, along with most of the other guys, that it was my first try, so I asked them to please celebrate with me whenever I score my second," Nell said.

The outside back by trade is being used as a forward in sevens and has settled quickly into senior company, crediting familiarity with the squad environment built during his years on the periphery. "It did feel a bit surreal in the beginning, and I am still pinching myself at times, but then, I have been around the guys for a while now," he said. "We have seen this year that if the guys do that, we are a tough team to beat."

With one tournament remaining and the series lead intact, Nell is focused on execution rather than the broader stakes. "We know what to do, and it all boils down to how we play together as a team. It is just a matter of going out there and doing it."

The squad received a boost ahead of the tournament with Donavan Don returning to the group after Dewald Human was ruled out with the knee injury he sustained in Spain. Don, who was part of the Hong Kong-winning squad and has featured in six tournaments this season, restores the travelling group to 14, with coach Philip Snyman naming his 13-man tournament squad on Thursday.

The Blitzboks open their pool campaign against Great Britain on Friday at 15:06 SA time, followed by Kenya at 20:36, before facing Fiji on Saturday morning at 11:06. All matches are live on SuperSport.
