Hooker Siphosethu Mnebelele has been named Junior Springbok captain for the Under-20 World Rugby Championship title defence in Georgia, following Riley Norton's call-up to the Springbok squad for the Nations Championship opener against England on 4 July at Ellis Park.
Mnebelele, who turned out for SA 'A' against Zimbabwe at the weekend, learned of his appointment from head coach Kevin Foote on Monday morning at Cape Town International Airport ahead of the squad's departure.
"It was surreal when coach Footy announced it this morning," Mnebelele said. "Just seeing the squad's reaction made me feel welcome, and the boys are ready to go to war."
Mnebelele was quick to credit Norton's influence. "Having had a leader like Riley in the team is something you can never take for granted. He's such a good leader, and as a teammate, you can learn so much from him. I just hope to lead the team as best as I possibly can."
Foote backed the appointment on the strength of Mnebelele's leadership track record, noting he captained SA Under-18 and has been part of the Junior Boks' leadership group for two seasons. "He's got the respect of his teammates, and it's a natural progression for him to take over from Riley."
The coach was equally effusive about Norton's rapid elevation to the senior squad. "He's a very special man. From the kick-off against the Barbarians, he made the first tackle. His work ethic, maturity and love for SA Rugby is amazing."
Foote also pointed to the broader pipeline, citing Mnebelele, Norton and Vusi Moyo — who made his senior national debut for the Springboks at the weekend — as products of an increasingly professionalised schools system. "In my day, players weren't physically ready to go from Under-19 to senior rugby. Now these guys get great S&C, great coaches — many of whom played professional rugby — and they're exposed to pressure early. Derby games draw up to 10,000 people, almost all of it televised. They're not scared of big crowds."
