Junior Boks target fitness and tempo as U20 Championship kicks off in Gqeberha
Coach Kevin Foote has identified physicality and ball-in-play time as the cornerstones of South Africa's approach when the Junior Springboks face Argentina in their opening U20 Rugby Championship fixture at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday (4.10pm).
The match is the second game of a double header, with defending champions New Zealand taking on Australia at 2pm.
Foote pointed to last year's tournament — also held in Gqeberha — as a direct influence on the squad's preparation, particularly around conditioning. "Our experience in Gqeberha was that the surface can be soft underfoot, which led to several players cramping," he said. "So we want to ensure our fitness levels match how we intend to play, especially against teams who favour a fast-paced game."
He noted that the southern hemisphere opposition demands a different tactical response compared to the set-piece-heavy approach of a side like Georgia. Stepping up fitness across their pre-tournament training camps has been a primary objective.
Argentina's coaching staff arrive with measured expectations. Assistant coach Eusebio Guinazu framed the tournament around two priorities: player development within Argentina's national high-performance programme, and competitive results that flow from ingrained habits and work ethic. He noted that several of the Los Pumitas squad have pre-season exposure through Super Rugby Americas franchises, with some having already logged competitive minutes.
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer confirmed Gqeberha is fully prepared to host the event for a second consecutive year, describing last year's staging as "a massive success." SANZAAR CEO Brendan Morris echoed that sentiment, reaffirming the championship's role as a development pathway for players, coaches and match officials alike.
