John Dobson has revealed that Cheslin Kolbe took a significant cut in earnings to secure his return to the Stormers for the 2026/27 season, with the coach emphatic that the signing is neither a Galactico deal nor a retirement move.
The Stormers officially confirmed Kolbe's signing on Monday, ending what Dobson described as "four false starts" in negotiations over the years. Kolbe, 32, left the Stormers nine years ago and has since played for Toulouse, Toulon, and Suntory Sungoliath.
"He's desperate to come back. The commitment that he made to come back — this is not a big Galactico signing, it's a guy really, really wanting to come back to Cape Town," Dobson said. "He's made a commercial sacrifice around that, which is highly appreciated by the team and shows his commitment."
Dobson was pointed about the financial dimension: Kolbe could have earned several multiples of his Stormers salary had he remained in Japan or moved to another franchise. The coach gave significant credit to Kolbe for doing "a lot of heavy lifting" to make the deal happen, including breaking his Suntory contract.
Kolbe has had a strong season in Japan, scoring 10 tries in 17 appearances while leading Suntory's points charts and guiding them into the League One semi-finals against Dave Rennie's Kobe Steelers. Dobson cited Eddie Jones's public praise of Kolbe's work ethic and off-ball commitment as further evidence that the winger remains at the peak of his powers.
The Stormers coach framed the signing in explicit terms of winning silverware and long-term squad development. "This is a guy who will be playing for us in 2029. It's not a retirement thing; he wants to win trophies," Dobson said, pointing to the prospect of younger players such as Josh Bulle, Markus Muller, and JC Mars developing alongside a 34-year-old Kolbe at the next World Cup cycle.
Kolbe's return is part of a broader homecoming for Stormers alumni, with Siya Kolisi rejoining from the Sharks and Wilco Louw returning from the Bulls. Dobson pushed back on any suggestion the club is assembling a marquee vanity roster: "Those guys are sons of the Stormers who've made fantastic contributions to this project, who all made sacrifices." He acknowledged the Stormers have lacked strike power this season and sees Kolbe as a direct solution to that, alongside the broader lift his presence brings to the franchise and the city.
