John Dobson has revealed that Cheslin Kolbe made significant financial sacrifices to secure his return to the Stormers for the 2026/27 season, with the winger turning down considerably more lucrative options elsewhere to come home.

The signing was officially confirmed on Monday, ending what Dobson described as "four false starts" in negotiations over the years. Kolbe had been under contract at Suntory Sungoliath, where he has had an outstanding season — 10 tries in 17 appearances while topping the Japan Rugby League One points-scoring charts before the knockouts, with Suntory now through to a semi-final against Dave Rennie's Kobe Steelers.

"He's desperate to come back. This is not a big Galactico signing — it's a guy really, really wanting to come back to Cape Town," Dobson said. "He would earn multiples of what he is if he stayed in Japan; he'd earn several fold on a commercial basis if he went to another franchise. He's made a commercial sacrifice around that, which is highly appreciated."

Dobson was emphatic that the move is neither a sunset contract nor a vanity signing. Kolbe will be 34 in 2029, and Dobson pointedly framed the deal in those terms, citing the development value for younger Stormers backs such as Josh Bulle, Markus Muller, and JC Mars in training alongside him. Eddie Jones's recent public praise for Kolbe's off-the-ball work and conditioning was also cited by Dobson as validation of his form and professionalism.

"It's not a retirement thing; he wants to win trophies," Dobson added. "We've struggled this season — we're a transition-based team and we've probably lacked a bit of strike power out wide. He solves that."

Kolbe's return is part of a broader homecoming of established Springboks to the Stormers, with Siya Kolisi arriving from the Sharks and prop Wilco Louw returning from the Bulls. Dobson pushed back on any suggestion of a Galactico recruitment strategy, insisting all three players are products of the Stormers system who chose to return at personal cost rather than being lured with inflated contracts.

It is nine years since Kolbe last wore the blue and white hoops, having left for Toulouse before moving to Toulon and then Japan.
