Francois Klopper gets the nod over Wilco Louw at tighthead prop as the Bulls name their side for Saturday's URC semifinal against Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield, with Johan Ackermann citing form and match fitness as the deciding factors.
Louw, who withdrew from the quarterfinal win over Munster at the last minute with bronchitis, is named on the bench, while Klopper — who has deputised effectively throughout the season during Louw's absences — retains his place on merit.
"It is on performance," Ackermann said. "I felt he did his part in the games where we didn't have access to Wilco. He's match fit and everything is ready to go. It's really a reward for Klopper on how he's performed."
Ackermann named 11 Springboks in the starting line-up and a further five on the bench. The backline is unchanged from the Munster quarterfinal, with Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Handre Pollard and URC Player of the Year Embrose Papier all starting.
The only enforced change to the bench comes at the back, where an injury to Sergeal Petersen sees Nizaam Carr added as a loose forward cover in his place.
The match carries significant personal milestones: captain Marcell Coetzee makes his 100th appearance for the Bulls, while hooker Johan Grobbelaar runs out for his 150th cap.
Ackermann acknowledged the Bulls' two defeats to Glasgow this season but said the tactical approach requires only minimal adjustment. "We did look back on what we need to do better because we lost twice against them. Maybe make small adjustments. And hopefully we can execute that tomorrow."
On the knockout dynamic, Ackermann was clear that tries and bonus points are secondary. "Tomorrow is nothing about scoring tries. It's nothing about bonus points. You just need to win, even with one point. So tactically, one can consider taking maybe more points instead."
A win would put the Bulls into their fourth URC final in five years.
