The Bulls travel to face Benetton Treviso on Saturday without captain Marcell Coetzee and Kurt-Lee Arendse, both ruled out with flu ahead of what is a must-win match if they are to secure a top-four finish and home quarterfinal advantage.
Coach Johan Ackermann has responded by recalling Elrigh Louw to the starting XV and handing Devon Williams a wing berth, while Stravino Jacobs returns from injury to take a bench spot. Jeandre Rudolph slots in at six to cover Coetzee's absence.
Embrose Papier and Handré Pollard are back at halfback, with Willie le Roux shifting to fullback. Ruan Nortje returns to the second row alongside Cobus Wiese in place of Ruan Vermaak, while Gerhard Steenekamp and Johan Grobbelaar start ahead of Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Marco van Staden, the latter moving to the bench.
The match carries added milestone significance: Le Roux will play his 400th first-class match, while Jacobs lines up for his 100th appearance for the Bulls. Ackermann was effusive about both, describing Le Roux's longevity as an extraordinary achievement and praising Jacobs as a versatile, highly coachable team man who has shown perseverance across multiple coaching regimes to reach the century mark.
Ackermann was equally clear-eyed about the threat Benetton pose despite their season ending with nothing to play for. "They could have easily been in the playoffs," he said, pointing to the quality of their wins across the URC and their narrow Champions Cup exit. "The fact that it's their last game makes them more dangerous — they can come out and just play, throw the ball around. It's very important we don't fall into that trap."
He also flagged the Bulls' own need for improvement after last week's error-heavy display, calling for greater clinical execution as they head into the playoff fortnight.
