The Bulls have booked their place in the URC final with a 22-21 semifinal victory over Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield on Saturday, recovering from an 18-point first-half deficit in one of the most dramatic comebacks of the season.
Glasgow flew out of the blocks, with South African-born winger Kyle Steyn crossing twice in the opening exchanges before a penalty try extended the home side's lead to 21-3. The Bulls compounded their own difficulties by spending extended periods in the first half with 14 men — Handré Pollard and Ruan Nortje both serving time off the field — and Marcell Coetzee was denied when he lost the ball attempting to force his way over the line.
Johan Grobbelaar, playing his 150th match, gave the Bulls a foothold when he touched down late in the first half to make it 21-10, but the half could have been buried before the break. Glasgow left wing Kyle Rowe was put into space with only Kurt-Lee Arendse to beat, cut inside rather than using the overlap, and Arendse's ankle-tap brought him down — the ball adjudged a knock-on. That intervention proved decisive in shaping the contest.
Head coach Johan Ackermann's message at halftime was straightforward: score the first try and the game reopens. Glasgow lock Scott Cummings was sent off shortly after the restart and the Bulls capitalised immediately. Embrose Papier, who took the man-of-the-match award, darted over from a ruck on the line to make it 21-15.
The Bulls' error rate dropped sharply in the second half and they moved the ball with growing conviction. Cameron Hanekom carried hard down the left touchline and into the opposition half, setting the platform for prop Francois Klopper to force his way over. Pollard converted to put the Bulls 22-21 ahead with more than 20 minutes remaining.
Pollard missed three second-half penalty attempts and the Bulls were not without anxious moments — a wayward box kick from Papier and a subsequent handling error by Nizaam Carr gifted Glasgow a scrum deep in Bulls territory with 10 minutes left. The Bulls pack responded by driving their opponents back to win the penalty, decisively swinging momentum back their way.
The Bulls hold on to win by a single point and advance to the URC final in two weeks.
