The Blitzboks suffered a 24-14 defeat to Australia in their final pool match at the HSBC World Championship in Valladolid on Saturday, ending a run of five consecutive tournament victories.

Quewin Nortje opened the scoring for South Africa, but tries from Harry Wilson and Henry Hutchinson had Australia leading 10-7 at the break. Gino Cupido briefly restored the Blitzboks' advantage early in the second half before Ben Dowling and Josh Turner sealed the win for the Australians, who had former Wallaby coach Joe Schmidt involved in their preparation ahead of the tournament.

The defeat drops the Blitzboks into a quarterfinal against Spain, who won Pool C by beating Fiji, scheduled for 5:11pm. The semifinals and final follow on Sunday.

In the women's competition, Fiji beat the Springbok Women 17-14, leaving South Africa without a win in pool play. They face Argentina in the ninth-place semifinal at 6:10pm.
