The Springboks defeated Scotland 42-28 in their Nations Championship match at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, with a dominant forward effort underpinning a six-try performance despite a largely rotated squad.
Embrose Papier opened the scoring after the Bok scrum bullied Scotland into submission near their line, winning a free kick before Papier darted through a gap from a subsequent ruck. The second try came through an unlikely build-up — Cobus Wiese went airborne for a lineout ball, was tilted backwards by prop Boan Venter, and when righted charged deep into Scottish territory before offloading to Paul de Villiers. The move ended with Evan Roos being awarded the try from close range.
At 14-0, Scotland changed tack, spreading the ball wide and using flat running lines to cut through the Bok defence. Tries from Matt Fagerson and Kyle Rowe, both converted, levelled the match heading into halftime.
The Boks reasserted control in the second half, winning penalties upfront and using that platform to attack with ball in hand. Quick tries from Elrigh Louw and Damian Willemse gave South Africa a commanding lead before Scotland clawed the deficit back to seven with further tries. Jesse Kriel had the final word, collecting a Handre Pollard grubber to seal the result.
Pollard, filling in at flyhalf, was flawless with the boot — converting all five of South Africa's tries — and composed in general play, particularly under the high ball. He started the second half on the bench, replaced by Quan Horn at the interval, but returned early after Ethan Horn went off for an HIA. Papier was sharp throughout, combining accurate kicking from the base with decisive running.
Captain Pieter-Steph du Toit was prominent across the loose and the lineout, while De Villiers — in only his second Test — carried himself like an established Test player. Edwill van der Merwe made his presence felt defensively, putting a big hit on former SA-qualified Scotland wing Kyle Steyn.
The result was also Rassie Erasmus's 55th birthday.
