The Springboks are back at number one in the World Rugby rankings after their 33-26 win over New Zealand at DHL Stadium on Saturday, ending the All Blacks' stay at the summit after just seven days.
South Africa gained 1.18 ranking points for the victory to move to 93.39, with New Zealand dropping the same amount to 92.85. Tries from Jesse Kriel, Damian de Allende and Siya Kolisi, combined with 18 points from the boot of Cheslin Kolbe, were enough to level the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series at one apiece.
It is the second time in as many years this precise pattern has played out. Twelve months ago, New Zealand also took top spot from the Boks at Eden Park before South Africa responded with a 43-10 win in Wellington to reclaim it.
The All Blacks scored four tries through Cam Roigard, Damian McKenzie, Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea — more than the Springboks for the second consecutive week — but the points tally was not enough to hold first place.
The series decider in Johannesburg will again put the top ranking on the line.
Elsewhere in the top 10, Australia's 27-21 away win over Argentina moved the Wallabies one place to seventh on 83.71 points, with the Pumas dropping to eighth on 82.08. The two sides meet again on 5 September, when those positions could reverse.
