South Africa unable to defend Commonwealth Games Sevens crown as Glasgow drops rugby from programme

Rugby sevens has been dropped from the streamlined 2026 Commonwealth Games programme in Glasgow, leaving South Africa with no chance to defend the men's gold they won in Birmingham.

South Africa will have no opportunity to defend their men's rugby sevens gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with the sport excluded from a heavily streamlined programme that has been reduced from 19 sports at Birmingham 2022 to just 10.

The Blitzbokke claimed gold in Birmingham with a 31-7 demolition of Fiji in the final — their second Commonwealth Games men's title, with New Zealand having dominated the event's history with five golds. The women's title in Birmingham went to Australia, who succeeded New Zealand as inaugural champions from the 2018 edition.

Glasgow stepped in as host after Victoria, Australia withdrew, but rugby sevens — an official Commonwealth Games sport since 1998 — is among those cut alongside badminton, beach volleyball, cricket, hockey, squash, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling.

The next major multi-sport stage for sevens will be the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
