Dave Rennie has moved to manage expectations around Richie Mo'unga's return to the All Blacks setup, making clear that the veteran flyhalf is unlikely to feature in the opening Test against the Springboks on August 22.
Mo'unga arrives in South Africa on Friday, the day before New Zealand face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld — their final warm-up ahead of the first Test. He was called up as a replacement for Billy Proctor, who suffered a shoulder blade injury against the Stormers last Friday, but Rennie was explicit that the positional switch drove the decision rather than any reassessment of his flyhalf options.
"By the time Richie arrives, the first three provincial games will be gone, and we felt him coming in and immersing himself and getting his head around our structures and details will be very beneficial," Rennie said at the All Blacks basecamp in Johannesburg. "The thinking is that it wouldn't be in the first Test, but he might get game time against the Lions to start pushing a claim there."
With Rieko Ioane able to cover centre and Emoni Narawa having played both fullback and outside centre on tour, Rennie said the squad carries adequate midfield depth in Proctor's absence.
Mo'unga's inclusion brings Rennie's flyhalf stocks to five, alongside Ruben Love, Josh Jacomb, Damian McKenzie and Beauden Barrett. Rennie was unambiguous about the pecking order. "At the moment it's been Ruben's jersey, and he's going well, so we're happy with that, but it will be good competition."
He added that he consulted the other four flyhalves before contacting Mo'unga. "I just wanted them to understand. Obviously Richie has been signed back to New Zealand Rugby, and my job as a head coach is to pick the best players available."
Mo'unga has not represented the All Blacks since the 2023 World Cup final and returned to New Zealand to play two NPC matches for Canterbury to re-establish his eligibility. Rennie was clear that his 18-month NZR contract carries no guarantee of selection.
Rennie also confirmed that captain Ardie Savea has arrived in South Africa and is preparing for the opening Test.
