Markus Muller stands to become the youngest Springbok debutant in the professional era if he takes the field during November's Nations Championship Tests against Italy, France, Ireland or on Finals' Weekend — breaking a record Frans Steyn has held since 2006.
Steyn made his Test debut at 19 years and 181 days against Ireland under Jake White. Muller, who turns out for the Stormers, would be 19 years and 118 days old on the day of the Italy fixture, with each subsequent match adding days but still leaving him comfortably inside Steyn's mark.
The 19-year-old's rise has been rapid. He debuted for the Stormers at 18 years, 9 months and 19 days — eclipsing Damian Willemse's previous record as the youngest player to represent the Cape Town side and making him only the second Stormer to debut before turning 19. His performances for Paarl Gimnasium first drew attention, and he moved into the Stormers senior training environment straight from school.
From there, the progression has been swift: a try for South Africa A against Zimbabwe, selection in Kevin Foote's Junior Boks squad for the U20 World Championship, and a starting role throughout the title defence including the semi-final and final, where he scored in the win over France. He also attended the first Springbok alignment camp earlier this year before earning his senior call-up as one of six surprises in Rassie Erasmus's squad.
Fellow 19-year-old Luan Giliomee, also called up, cannot break Steyn's record but could become the second-youngest debutant in the professional era depending on when he features. If he plays against Italy he slots behind Steyn; if he debuts against Ireland he would be 19 years and 294 days, which would displace Canan Moodie — who debuted at 19 years and 302 days against Australia in 2022 — from second place on the list.
