Richie Mo'unga will not be available for New Zealand's July Tests or Rugby Championship matches against the Springboks in South Africa this year, with NZR chief executive Steve Lancaster confirming no exemption has been sought or granted.
Mo'unga signed an 18-month deal to return to Canterbury and the Crusaders ahead of the 2027 World Cup, but under NZR's overseas-based player policy he remains ineligible until he is back playing domestic rugby in New Zealand. That rules him out of the initial squads for both the July series and the Rugby Championship fixtures against South Africa.
Lancaster was unequivocal on the matter, telling Newstalk ZB: "We're very clear and have a strong amount of belief in our policy for selection to the All Blacks." He acknowledged the difficulty of holding the line but pointed to players who had turned down overseas contracts on the basis of the existing rules. "We've got world-class players in the same position who committed to staying in New Zealand based on that policy. We have to think about the implications of relaxing it."
A back-door route to availability does exist: once Mo'unga is back competing domestically and has met the required competition criteria, he could be called up if injuries strike later in the season. Lancaster left that door slightly ajar, noting that "potentially he could be eligible" under those circumstances.
For the Springboks, it means facing an All Blacks side without one of the key figures in recent head-to-head clashes. The 31-year-old started at No.10 for New Zealand in both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups and has been central to results between the two sides across Super Rugby and Test rugby over the past decade.
