The Junior Boks have not yet clinched the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship title, despite widespread reports — including an official SA Rugby press release — declaring them champions following Sunday's 56-17 thrashing of Australia in Gqeberha.
The confusion stems from a mid-tournament revelation that Sanzaar changed the try-scoring bonus-point rules ahead of the 2026 edition of the competition without adequately communicating the change to key stakeholders on the ground. The altered system — awarding a bonus point for four tries rather than the three-try differential that has applied in recent seasons — only came to light after the second round, by which point SA Rugby had already sent out a release celebrating the title.
Under the rule set that was widely assumed to be in operation, South Africa would have held an unassailable six-point lead over New Zealand heading into the final round. The host broadcaster reinforced that understanding during Sunday's broadcast, running a graphic that reflected that gap. SA Rugby's release followed the same logic.
The official tournament log on SA Rugby's website told a different story, however, showing only a five-point lead. By Monday morning, SA Rugby had updated its website to reflect that the Junior Boks had "all but sealed" the title — a material retreat from the championship declaration.
Rugby365 has confirmed that the SA Rugby website log is accurate. South Africa sit on 10 points after two rounds. Argentina and New Zealand have five points each, meaning both sides remain mathematically alive.
For Argentina to overhaul South Africa, Los Pumitas would need a very large bonus-point win over Australia this coming Sunday, while the Junior Boks would need to be denied points. New Zealand face a similarly steep task — they would need to win big in their final match while South Africa collect nothing.
Kevin Foote's side remain firmly in control of their own destiny and need just one more log point to seal the title.
