Leinster retained the URC title with a commanding 36-7 victory over the Bulls in the Grand Final at Croke Park on Friday evening, handing the Pretoria side a fourth Grand Final defeat in five seasons.
The Bulls were unrecognisable in the first half, gifting Leinster a 22-0 lead by the break through a combination of handling errors, lineout disruption, and two yellow cards for deliberate knock-downs. Canan Moodie and Willie le Roux were both sin-binned, each conceding tries in the process as Leinster repeatedly found space out wide.
The opening scores came in quick succession. Tommy O'Brien hacked ahead after Handré Pollard's knock-on to score, then Rieko Ioane finished off a sweeping move from a quick lineout midfield. Jack Conan added a third before Sam Prendergast's penalty made it 22-0 at the break — a scoreline made worse by Pollard kicking dead a penalty in the final act of the half.
Leinster killed the contest within two minutes of the restart when Prendergast crossed for their fourth try to make it 29-0. The Bulls' frustrations deepened when the TMO disallowed Harold Vorster what would have been their opening score.
Moodie eventually got the Bulls on the board after the hour mark, finishing off an attacking lineout move after James Lowe was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on. A second TMO intervention denied Ruan Nortje a try — ruled out for a marginal forward pass — and Harry Byrne's converted try completed the 36-7 scoreline.
Scorers — Leinster 36: Tries: O'Brien, Ioane, Conan, Prendergast, Byrne. Cons: Prendergast (3), Byrne. Pen: Prendergast. Bulls 7: Try: Moodie. Con: Pollard.
