Dewi Lake has been named Wales captain for the inaugural Nations Championship, with Jac Morgan missing out despite his return from a dislocated shoulder. Head coach Steve Tandy announced Lake ahead of Saturday's non-cap match against the Barbarians, with Nations Championship fixtures against Fiji, Argentina and South Africa to follow.
Morgan had captained Wales in Tandy's first match in charge — against Argentina in November 2025 — before dislocating his left shoulder while scoring a try in that game. Lake stepped in and held the role through the remainder of the November series and the Six Nations, and Tandy has now confirmed him on a longer-term basis.
The two are former Ospreys teammates, both now heading to Gloucester, and previously co-captained Wales at the 2023 World Cup under Warren Gatland.
"Jac's an incredible leader, he's been unlucky with injury otherwise he'd still be in this role," Lake said. "Either way it went, the other one was always going to be full of support for the other. We come as a pair quite a lot."
Wales head into the Nations Championship having ended a three-year Six Nations win drought with victory over Italy in March, a result built on competitive performances against Scotland and Ireland earlier in that tournament.
