The Junior Springboks secured the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship with a game to spare, dismantling Australia U20 56–17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Sunday evening in front of a home crowd of 9 576.
Head coach Kevin Foote pointed to the squad's collective growth as the foundation of the performance, drawing a deliberate contrast with their position twelve months ago. "From how we felt a year ago on this same night, there was a lot of motivation going into this game," he said. "There was a huge improvement. I think the whole squad showed what it means to play for South Africa. We showed grit and I'm super proud of everyone."
Foote was particularly satisfied with the bench's response after they had faded against Argentina in the previous round following a dominant opening 50 minutes. "By their own admission, they wanted to fix last week, and I thought they did that today," he said. The squad's discipline also drew praise — the Junior Boks have gone through the tournament without a single yellow or red card. "We haven't had a card in this competition yet, which is massive."
On the team's identity, Foote was clear that physicality alone no longer defines this group. "Our DNA is physicality, but it's also skill. You see the physicality in breakdown and how we want to play. This team plays with pride."
Captain Riley Norton credited the cohesion built across the year as the driving force behind the title. "For us it's about character and care. The off-field connection has been unbelievable, and that carries onto the field. We've got an awesome group of guys who are willing to sacrifice for each other." Norton also acknowledged the impact of the Gqeberha crowd: "It means a lot playing at home. You feel the crowd, and it pushes you to give more for the guy next to you."
Despite the title being secured, Norton moved quickly to frame the final round fixture as unfinished business. "If you take your foot off the gas, a team like New Zealand will punish you. We want to finish this tournament properly and keep improving."
The Junior Boks face New Zealand U20 next Saturday at 16h10 in their final pool match.
