Davids targets maiden Hong Kong title on 58th SVNS appearance
Zain Davids heads into this weekend's HSBC SVNS Hong Kong tournament with one notable gap on his résumé: despite five previous appearances at the venue, a Hong Kong title has eluded him. The 28-year-old is adamant that record carries no psychological weight.
"We have never won here, fair enough, but that is not consuming us," Davids said from Hong Kong ahead of the Blitzboks' Pool A campaign against Uruguay, Spain and Argentina. "What we want is to be on the same page, execute our game plan as one, and take it one game at a time."
The tournament marks the beginning of the HSBC SVNS Championship phase, with all sides level on zero points — a reset Davids views as an opportunity rather than a pressure point. "What happened in the past counts for nothing, but what happens this weekend will."
Davids was rested for the Vancouver and New York legs of the Series, missing out on that double, but was part of the Cape Town and Perth title-winning squads. He credits coach Philip Snyman's transparent rotation policy for keeping the squad aligned, and S&C coach Ghafoer Luckan for ensuring standards don't drop during those absences.
"I use the word 'rested' in italics," Davids noted. "Ghafoer keeps a very sharp eye on our prescribed fitness programme, even when we are not travelling and he is away with the team. So I am fit and ready for this one."
With a sizeable South African contingent among the Hong Kong crowd, Davids framed a potential title run as a shared pursuit. "If we go all out and finish on top, it will be as much for them as for us."
