The Bulls and Stormers overhauled the URC standings on the opening SA derby weekend, with comprehensive wins over the Lions and Sharks respectively leaving both previously unbeaten sides reeling.
At Loftus, the Bulls were dominant across the park in the Jukskei derby, with seven returning Springboks integrating seamlessly into Johan Ackermann's structures as they dismantled the Lions 57-15. Ackermann credited the coaching staff's preparation during the week — detailed emails on Monday, individual meetings on Tuesday, a day off Wednesday and a full training run on Thursday — for the smooth assimilation.
"It wasn't perfect, there were mistakes, but you could see they were buying into what we wanted to do and quickly settled in," Ackermann said. "I'm just proud of all the guys. We knew we had to be at our best to beat a side that's in form."
In Cape Town, the Stormers beat the Sharks 39-22 in a match defined by scrum dominance. Wilco Louw and Ntuthuko Mchunu got the better of Ox Nché and Thomas du Toit in the tight, with replacements Neethling Fouche and Vernon Matongo sustaining the pressure throughout. The Stormers earned five or six scrum penalties — a return that surprised even coach John Dobson given the Sharks' front-row personnel.
"That's a nice reminder of the beauty of rugby," Dobson said. "It's a collective effort and it's a team thing the way our back-five brought it as well."
Sharks coach JP Pietersen pointed to first-half injuries to flyhalf Vusi Moyo and Eben Etzebeth as pivotal, with both leaving the field when the score was still 8-8. Two subsequent yellow cards compounded the pressure.
"It was a tough ask defending with 13 men against a very strong team," Pietersen said.
The results reshuffled the standings significantly. The Sharks dropped from top of the log to fifth on 10 points, and the Lions fell from third to seventh on nine. The Bulls and Stormers sit third and fourth respectively, both on 11 points.
