South Africa have defended their World Rugby U20 Championship title, beating France 16-5 in Tbilisi on Saturday to claim a third crown overall.

Western Province fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed contributed eight points through a conversion and two penalties, with centre Markus Muller scoring the decisive try as the Baby Boks pulled clear in the second half.

South Africa led 6-0 at the break via Ahmed penalties, France having been denied a first-half try when a Romeo Bonnard Martin effort was ruled out by the TMO. Flanker Raphael Audebert gave Les Bleuets hope six minutes after the restart, but a second French try — Bonnard Martin's lock partner Baptiste Veschambre — was also chalked off by the video referee.

Muller then crashed over to restore a six-point buffer, and 19-year-old Ahmed added the conversion and a penalty in the closing seconds to seal the result.

The victory gives South Africa their third U20 title, following the 2012 triumph and last year's final win over New Zealand. France, beaten finalists for the fourth time in the tournament's history, remain on three titles.
