The Pick n Pay Women Super League 2 reaches the semi-final stage on Saturday, with both matches streamed live on the SA Rugby YouTube channel.
The Hollywood Foundation Pumas Women host the Griffons Women at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit (13h00), while AVBOB Griquas Women take on the SWD Eagirls at Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley (15h00).
The Pumas enter as clear favourites, having gone unbeaten through the league phase as defending champions. Their backline has been the standout unit in the competition, led by 20-year-old wing Megan Guambe, who has crossed for 10 tries this season. The gulf between the sides was stark in their round-two meeting, when the Pumas ran out 63-13 winners in Welkom. Griffons coach Shamila Louw's side have improved since that July clash, but the margin of that defeat makes a turnaround difficult to envisage.
The Griquas-Eagirls clash is considerably harder to call. When the sides met in round six in Groot-Brakrivier a fortnight ago, SWD came from 19-0 down to win 29-26, scoring five second-half tries to stun the home crowd. Griquas, however, have grown into Suzuki Stadium as a genuine fortress, and arrive in form after a 73-15 demolition of Limpopo — their biggest score of the season — in which wing Maserati Bangaza bagged four tries and prop Nicole van Wyk completed a hat-trick.
Bangaza and flyhalf Juanine Jacobs are SWD's primary threats, with Jacobs' tactical kicking a key weapon. Griquas' kicking game will also be closely watched: Antoneica Hannies has converted 16 tries this season, and her accuracy from the tee could prove decisive in what is expected to be a tight contest. Junior Springbok Women lock Nonkosi Ngema adds experience and physicality to the Eagirls' forward pack.
Chante Olivier referees in Nelspruit; Siyanda Pikoli takes charge in Kimberley.
