Two of the four Pick n Pay Women's Super League 2 semi-final berths remain undecided heading into Saturday's final round of league fixtures, with the SWD Eagirls, Griffons Women and Leopards Women all still in contention.
The Hollywood Foundation Pumas Women have already secured a home semi-final after finishing the league phase unbeaten, while AVBOB Griquas Women are confirmed in second place and will host the other semi-final in Kimberley regardless of Saturday's outcomes.
The Griffons sit third on 14 points and hold the strongest position among the chasing pack, but face a Griquas side carrying serious momentum into their trip to Welkom's Down Touch Investments Stadium. The SWD Eagirls are fourth on 12 points and are heavy favourites to see off Limpopo Blue Bulls Women — who are out of contention and without a win this season — at Outeniqua Park in George. The Leopards, fifth on 11 points, must beat the Valke in Kempton Park and hope both the Eagirls and Griffons slip up, a combination that makes their path to the semis the narrowest of the three.
The scheduling works in the Griffons' favour: their match in Welkom kicks off at 14h00, meaning they will know the results from George and Kempton Park before their contest reaches its conclusion.
Griquas' form is underlined by what unfolded in their most recent outing against Limpopo Blue Bulls Women — a 73-15 demolition at Suzuki Park. Wing Maserati Bangaza scored four tries and prop Nicole van Wyk claimed a hat-trick as Griquas ran in 12 tries in all, 46 of their points coming in the second half.
In the Griffons' most recent match, a tight affair against Griquas, the Northern Free Staters trailed before scoring three unanswered second-half tries to lead 31-21. Griquas hit back through a Mtshweni hat-trick — her third try cutting the deficit to 31-28 — but scrumhalf Pinkie Touto's penalty gave Griffons a 34-28 cushion that proved decisive, Griquas' final conversion miss sealing the result.
