Round five of the Pick n Pay Women's Super League 2 on Saturday sees Leopards Women, Hollywood Foundation Pumas Women and Limpopo Blue Bulls Women all hosting, with the Valke on a bye.
The Pumas have already secured their semi-final berth, while wins for Griquas, SWD or the Leopards would do the same for those sides. At the bottom of the log, Limpopo are still chasing a first win of the campaign and face a Griffons side that has found its rhythm — the Northern Free Staters knowing a result in Polokwane would keep their own play-off hopes alive.
Griquas arrive in Potchefstroom on the back of a 73-15 demolition of Limpopo, a performance built heavily on the second half when they piled on 46 unanswered points. Wing Maserati Bangaza bagged four tries in that match — taking her tournament tally to six in two games — while prop Nicole van Wyk contributed a hat-trick. The 21-year-old Sol Plaatjie University student, who scored six tries across six matches last season, is shaping up as one of the competition's most dangerous finishers.
The Leopards, back from a bye, will have done their homework on Bangaza and Griquas' expansive attack, but they carry their own weapons. Flyhalf Amzolele Gqola, who joined the Matlosana Rugby Academy from Border, has converted 11 of her side's 15 tries — the best strike rate in the competition — and her boot is likely to be decisive if the match tightens.
In Mbombela, the Pumas host the SWD Eagirls in what shapes as a potential preview of the final. SWD, former champions with a record of winning away from home in big matches, will need to handle altitude and a Pumas side that has been ruthless in every fixture so far.
The round also produced a tense finish in the Griffons' earlier result, which saw the Northern Free Staters rally with three unanswered second-half tries to lead 31-21, before eventually securing the win 34-28, with scrumhalf Pinkie Touto's penalty kick proving the margin. Sphamandla Mtshweni crossed for a hat-trick in a losing effort for the opposition, with her conversion missed on the final try proving costly.
