Damian Willemse's milestone 50th Test appearance ended in confusion after SuperSport mistakenly presented the man-of-the-match award to Damian de Allende following South Africa's 45-21 victory over England at Ellis Park on Saturday.
According to reports, the broadcaster's commentators had selected Willemse for the accolade after a commanding display at full-back, but a communication error saw De Allende collect the award instead. The 28-year-old reached the half-century mark alongside Cheslin Kolbe, with both players having spent eight years in the Springbok jersey.
Willemse's performance showcased his authority under the high ball and tactical control, with his aerial dominance laying the groundwork for several attacking opportunities. His 50:22 kick stood out as a highlight in what proved a comprehensive Nations Championship opener for the hosts.
"It is a very special occasion," Willemse said after the match. "Not only for myself and Cheslin, but for Paul [de Villiers] as well, making his debut, and Ben-Jason [Dixon] coming in late. I'm really proud of the team."
The full-back covered 57 metres through 13 carries and made several crucial defensive interventions, including holding up Marcus Smith in the opening quarter.
