The USA U20 Women beat the Junior Springbok Women 47-12 at Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday, built on a dominant first half in which they led 33-0 at the break.
The visitors were sharp and direct from the outset. Hooker Alyssa Hine opened the scoring after sustained early pressure, with lock Pip Simmons adding a second from a scrum penalty to make it 12-0. No 8 Maddie Hubbell then crossed for the third after a poor clearance kick gifted the USA field position, with Henrich converting to put the scoreboard at 19-0 after 24 minutes.
Centre and captain Arielle Fotso scored the fourth as the USA maintained relentless ball-in-hand pressure, and Hine got her second on the stroke of half-time after SA No 8 Yanelisa Plaatjie was yellow-carded for cynical play. The conversion made it 33-0 at the interval.
South Africa's first-half performance was undermined by dropped passes, poor kicking decisions and ill-executed tap penalties that repeatedly handed momentum back to the USA. On at least two occasions the Junior Bok Women were in position to score near the USA line but chose the wrong options.
The second half told a markedly different story. The hosts retained possession more effectively, played with greater directness and their handling improved considerably. Winger Siphumelele Mdlalose opened SA's account before Hubbell extended the USA lead to 40-5 following another red-zone error by the home side. Flyhalf Julene Haas then broke through after forward drives stretched the USA defence and converted her own try to make it 40-12.
The USA scored a final try late in the match to complete the 47-12 scoreline.
The two sides meet again at Markotter Stadium next Friday. SA's coaching staff have pointed to the second-half display as the foundation from which to build ahead of the return fixture.
