The USA Women's Eagles U20s claimed a 60-17 victory over the Junior Springbok Women at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday, completing a two-match series sweep after winning the opening fixture 47-12 the previous week.
The Americans led 31-10 at half-time and pulled away in the final quarter, though South Africa mounted a more competitive showing than the scoreline ultimately reflected — particularly in the second half, where they briefly closed to within 14 points before the USA reasserted control.
South Africa drew first blood when No 8 Palesa Matee— wait, the opening try came from Jada Davids, who crashed over from a driven lineout seven minutes in to give the hosts a 5-0 lead. The USA responded swiftly, with Bella Vogel finishing from a second-phase move before Kiyanah Edwards and then No 8 Maddie Hubbell extended the lead. Hubbell was the visitors' standout, crossing for a hat-trick in the first half alone — her second and third tries both stemming from USA counter-attacks that exposed South Africa's kick-and-chase errors. Annie Henrich's boot kept the scoreboard ticking and the USA went to the break leading 31-10.
South Africa's second try had come just before the half-hour mark, when No 8 Palesa Matee picked up from a scrum and drove over, with Haylee Hardneck's conversion pulling the score back to 24-10.
The pattern of the second half mirrored the first: South Africa attacked with intent, made inroads, but repeatedly found themselves held up over the line when seemingly in position to score. Flanker Kaylin Heuvel eventually got the hosts over, converted by Julene Haas to make it 31-17, and for a period midway through the second half the Junior Bok Women looked capable of mounting a genuine challenge. Replacement back Owami Mohuli was particularly lively off the bench, making a series of prominent carries and tackles.
The pivotal moment came when USA replacement flanker Cora Haughey crashed over from a maul to extend the lead to 38-17 around the hour mark, halting South Africa's momentum. The USA then pulled clear to seal a 60-17 win.
While the series result went emphatically to the USA, the improvement in South Africa's second-half performances across both matches offers some encouragement — the junior side's struggles were rooted more in game management and lack of experience than in effort or physicality.
