SA 'A' captain Vincent Tshituka says the forwards' primary responsibility against Zimbabwe at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday is to generate front-foot ball for what he describes as a backline loaded with talent and pace.
The SA 'A' backline features uncapped quartet Luan Giliomee, Jaco Williams, Markus Muller, Zekhethelo Siyaya, Yaqeen Ahmed and Haashim Pead, with Lukhanyo Am providing the experienced anchor. Tshituka was emphatic about the forwards' role in unlocking that potential.
"As long as there is magic in the backline, our job as the forwards is to give them the best platform to express themselves and to use their talents," the Lions lock said. "There are a lot of experienced guys in the backline and a lot of guys who are hungry as well."
Tshituka singled out Am's influence on the group, noting the 42-cap centre brings a composure the younger players benefit from. "Sometimes the younger guys just want to go, go, go, but he brings that balance. I don't feel this weight of leadership when I have him there."
Rassie Erasmus included 21 uncapped players in the extended 51-man group assembled for the Gqeberha double-header, and Tshituka spoke highly of how those newcomers have applied themselves during the training camp. "These kids are outstanding rugby players, and their ability to learn is something I have really been impressed with. I think SA rugby is in really good hands."
On the captaincy itself, Tshituka was measured but clearly motivated. "The honour is of the highest order. There is a responsibility that has been put on me and I want to carry that out to the best of my ability."
He acknowledged Zimbabwe will arrive with purpose of their own, with World Cup preparation adding context to their motivation, and noted the SA 'A' camp has done its analytical work despite the limited footage typically available for a Zimbabwe fixture. "I think a lot of the guys are going to be hungry — they are fighting for what we have here. Contracts as well, so that's never to be underestimated."
