The Springbok Women completed a two-test sweep of Fiji with a 29-22 win at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday, claiming the inaugural Ubuntu-Bula Trophy after overturning a 10-5 halftime deficit.
Debutant wing Maria Tshiremba was the match-winner, crossing three times in the second half to confirm South Africa's dominance in a contest that was far tighter than their 55-12 victory in the opening test. Fiji led twice during the match and were effective in their offload game, providing a sterner examination than the series scoreline suggests.
Assistant coach Franzel September said the challenge was exactly what the squad needed. "We expected Fiji to come back stronger in the second test after winning 55-12 in the first and they did. This was a proper test match," he said. "We were tested in different areas this time around and it was great for us as we needed to adapt and adjust our strategies. We have our DNA of first phase possession to fall back on to, but we also showed other areas of strength and that was a big plus for us."
September was particularly pleased with Tshiremba's response to being selected for her debut. "The players and especially the coaches were really happy for Maria – we backed her and selected her for this match and she responded so well. It is always pleasing when a player rewards the faith coaches put in her."
The squad returns to South Africa on Monday evening, with the Black Ferns visiting Johannesburg early next month.
