Stormers hand record-breaking debut to teenage centre Markus Muller
Markus Muller is set to become the youngest player in Stormers history when he takes the field against Glasgow Warriors, surpassing Damian Willemse's record at 18 years, 9 months and 19 days — only the second player to represent the franchise before turning 19.
Director of rugby John Dobson has structured the matchday 23 specifically to manage Muller's introduction, opting for a 5-3 bench split rather than the usual 6-2 to give himself more backline cover. The plan is to bring the centre on for the final 10 to 15 minutes, with Ruhan Nel and Dan Kriel available in the run-on side to provide insurance if something goes wrong earlier in the match.
"I don't want him to go off to the U20 Championships when we're going into the Currie Cup, and he hasn't had this experience," Dobson said after naming his squad.
Muller's rapid rise has been well-documented — Paarl Gimnasium, Western Province U19, SA Schools, a Junior Springbok selection for the U20 Rugby Championship, and, notably, an invitation to the Springboks' alignment camp earlier this year. Injuries to Johnny Roche and Josh Boulle have accelerated the timeline, though Dobson was clear the decision was driven by more than squad necessity.
"We wanted to play Markus this season; we wanted to play him against the Dragons, but we didn't see him because he was at the SA U20 camp," he said. "It's important to show that at the Stormers, if you come through, we will give you an opportunity."
Dobson acknowledged the temptation to talk the teenager up but deliberately held back. "He's a very, very special player" was about as far as he would go publicly, conscious of the pressure that comes with inflated expectations at senior level.
After the Glasgow match, Muller links up with Kevin Foote's Junior Springbok squad for the U20 Rugby Championship.
