The Stormers claimed a commanding 39-22 bonus-point victory over the Sharks in Round Three of the URC at DHL Stadium on Saturday, running in six tries to three — but the afternoon was clouded by first-half injuries to Springboks Eben Etzebeth and Vusi Moyo, both of whom left the field before the break.

The Stormers' scrum was the decisive weapon. The Sharks won only 50 percent of their own scrum ball in the first half and improved marginally to 57 percent for the match, a statistic that translated directly into field position, territory and ultimately points against them. Two yellow cards — both awarded to Sharks players — compounded their misery, with the visitors briefly reduced to 13 men heading into half-time.

Seabelo Senatla opened the scoring after five minutes, finishing in the corner following a succession of Sharks penalties. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu added a penalty in the 13th minute before Manu Tshituka hit back for the Sharks after Leolin Zas was caught offside inside his own 22. Gianni Lombard, on his Sharks debut, levelled at 8-8 with a long-range penalty in the 29th minute.

The match turned in the 34th minute when Matt Romao was yellow-carded for a no-arms grasscutter tackle on Jonathan Roche. The Stormers immediately exploited the numerical advantage through Hacjivah Dayimani off a rolling maul, and then Andre-Hugo Venter dotted down from another maul after the halftime siren — with Tshituka simultaneously in the sinbin for repeated infringements in the red zone — to send the Stormers to the break leading 29-8.

Leolin Zas extended that advantage to bonus-point territory within a minute of the restart, finishing from close range after sharp breakdown awareness. Dayimani grabbed his second in the 47th minute following a dominant five-metre scrum that forced Ethan Hooker to carry back into his own in-goal area.

The Sharks showed some resolve through Romao and Phepsi Buthelezi to close the gap to 39-22, but JJ Kotze's rolling maul try in the 63rd minute restored a comfortable Stormers buffer. Dayimani was denied a hat-trick when a Damian Willemse knock-on ruled out the score in the 71st minute, and the Sharks' final set-piece opportunity evaporated when they conceded a free kick at the lineout.

Zas was named Player of the Match for his try, two linebreaks and nine carries.
