The Springbok Women secured a 20-0 WXV Global Series victory over Spain at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on Sunday, keeping the hosts scoreless throughout despite significant injury disruptions and several nervy moments.
Captain Babalwa Latsha suffered an ankle injury in the fifth minute but initially soldiered on before eventually being replaced by Nombuyekezo Mdliki — who was then stretchered off in painful circumstances, prompting a lengthy stoppage. Latsha remarkably returned to the field following Mdliki's exit.
South Africa drew first blood when Catha Jacobs crossed from close range after a forward-driven phase, with Jakkie Cilliers converting to open the account. Cilliers added a penalty to push the lead to 10-0 at the interval, her reliable boot proving a consistent source of points throughout.
Aseza Hele, dynamic from the base of the scrum, atoned for a first-half knock-on on the tryline by scoring early in the second half from a tap-and-go, though Cilliers was unable to convert, leaving the margin at 15-0. South Africa added a further five points to seal the 20-0 result.
Patience Mokone, on her first start, showed genuine attacking promise and produced a crucial try-saving tackle when Spain's Claudia Peña broke through midfield. Byhandre Dolf again looked composed at flyhalf, and Vainah Ubisi contributed a lineout steal at a critical defensive moment.
Spain threatened on occasion — most notably with a kick pass to the corner that nearly produced a try in the second half — but the Bok Women's defence held firm throughout, giving their side a clean sheet in Seville.
