RG Snyman has conceded that missing the Springboks' entire 2026 international season is a near certainty following his latest ACL injury, sustained during Leinster's URC defeat to Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun in March.
The 31-year-old lock, speaking on the GameTime podcast alongside Steven Kitshoff, declined to look ahead to the 2027 Rugby World Cup when asked, saying it was "a bit early for that question" given the full season of preparation that lies ahead for the squad. "I know the guys' minds and heads would be 'next job, next job' mentality," he said, indicating he is wary of projecting beyond his own recovery timeline.
Snyman described missing the 2026 campaign as "a bit of a sh*t one to miss out" but said his focus is on returning to the field and contributing to the team environment where possible. "Obviously for me this season is just focusing on getting back on the field and trying to do whatever I can to still support the guys."
This is the third serious knee injury of Snyman's career. He suffered back-to-back ACL tears to his left knee between 2020 and 2022 while at Munster, which kept him out of international rugby for two years before his return in the 2023 Rugby World Cup build-up. The latest tear — this time to his right knee — follows a similarly debilitating pattern, though the 50-cap lock acknowledged that experience offers some practical advantage. "Luckily I have been through similar stuff, so it's a familiar road for me, which is a little bit sh*t to say, but at least I know what to expect and what to do to get back on the field."
