The Sharks claimed a 36-21 bonus-point victory over Cardiff in the URC, with teenage fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya earning Man of the Match honours and 21-year-old flank Matt Romao delivering one of the performances of the night.
Siyaya, still to turn 20, was instrumental throughout — delaying his pass to create Ethan Hooker's try, landing a telling kick in the 17th minute, and initiating the kick-and-chase that led to Thomas du Toit's score at a critical juncture. Romao was equally prominent: he scored twice, was a consistent threat at the breakdown, and halted a dangerous Cardiff attack with a crushing hit on Josh McNally before finishing off a precise line off Jaden Hendrikse's pass.
The victory came despite the Sharks losing captain Andre Esterhuizen to injury after just 52 seconds — a development that will concern Rassie Erasmus, who is set to name his Springbok squad early next week. Esterhuizen's exit forced Hooker to shift to the centres and brought Jaco Williams on to the wing. Jurenzo Julius, who beat six defenders and provided a try assist in the first half, also failed to emerge for the second half.
Hendrikse controlled the game well around the fringes and kicked shrewdly with the wind in the second half. Edwill van der Merwe led the Sharks' aerial dominance and made crucial defensive interventions, while Gianni Lombard — continuing to find form after limited game time at the Lions — managed the conditions adequately despite conceding turnovers and missing tackles.
Manu Tshituka's intervention in the 44th minute to deny Danny Southworth a try was another key defensive moment, with Nick Hatton taking over the captaincy from Esterhuizen and doing what he typically does — the basics, efficiently and without fuss.
