The Hollywoodbets Sharks' scrum faltered at a critical juncture on Saturday, handing the DHL Stormers a decisive platform in their 39-22 United Rugby Championship victory at DHL Stadium. Despite fielding a formidable front row featuring Springbok props Thomas du Toit and Ox Nché alongside hooker Eduan Swart, the Durban side conceded multiple penalties at the set piece, a sharp contrast to their dominant scrummaging display against Leinster the previous week.

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen acknowledged the contest swung both ways but pinpointed the penalties conceded on their own ball as particularly damaging. "We were just outside our 22 and defended well to get the ball back," Pietersen said. "You give yourself up and then a scrum penalty, not even a reset scrum penalty, they went in the corner. The maul was great from the Stormers." The coach confirmed his side must improve their contesting technique, adding that technical issues involving the hooker's brake foot may have contributed to the referee's decisions.

The Stormers pack, anchored by Wilco Louw, Ntuthuko Mchunu and Andre-Hugo Venter, exploited the advantage ruthlessly. Pietersen described the battle as a clash between two of the competition's best scrummaging units, but the penalties handed the hosts field position and momentum at key moments. "It was probably two of the best scrumming packs in the competition, so it's always going to go 50-50," he said. "We must give credit. I think we must get better on our contesting. That's something we need to work on."

Behind the scrum, the Stormers backline flourished. Damian Willemse set up Seabelo Senatla's opening try on six minutes and finished with 13 carries for 76 metres, while Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu orchestrated the attack with assured timing and kicking. Leolin Zas marked his 101st appearance with a second-half try, and Ruhan Nel's support running helped the hosts rack up consistent yardage.

The Sharks now face a swift turnaround to address their set-piece deficiencies. With the scrum having been a strength against Leinster, Pietersen's technical review will be pivotal if the Durban side are to regain their platform in the rounds ahead.
