The Sharks returned to winning ways in the United Rugby Championship with a six-try performance at Cardiff Arms Park, though the result was overshadowed by a serious injury to Andre Esterhuizen.
The Springbok centre lasted just 52 seconds before rolling his ankle in an aerial contest, forcing him from the field. He was subsequently seen on crutches with his right foot in a moon boot, a worrying sight with Rassie Erasmus set to name his squad early next week.
Despite the early setback, the visitors responded immediately through Ethan Hooker, who finished after Jurenzo Julius broke through Cardiff's defence. The teenage fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya delivered a man-of-the-match display, creating Hooker's try with a delayed pass and contributing a crucial kick-and-chase that led to Thomas du Toit's score at a pivotal moment.
Matt Romao crossed twice, while Jason Jenkins added another from a driving maul as the Sharks led 17-7 at the interval. Cardiff fought back in the second half through James Botham's double, briefly taking the lead at 21-17, but the Sharks' superior finishing in the final quarter secured the bonus-point victory.
Siyaya, still 19, showcased his full repertoire with devastating footwork, intelligent kicking and defensive interventions. Edwill van der Merwe led the aerial dominance that proved crucial, whilst Julius beat six defenders in the first half before departing at the break.
