The Springbok Women opened their Rugby Africa Women's Cup campaign in Nairobi with a 64-5 victory over Madagascar on Saturday, but assistant coach Franzel September has already identified clear areas for improvement ahead of Wednesday's match against Uganda.
September singled out breakdown work and discipline as the two most pressing concerns. The Boks conceded unnecessary penalties for high tackles and offside infringements, and were turned over too easily when they lacked numbers at the ruck.
"We did not always stay calm; at times we were over eager to score points," September said. "We need to be better in those aspects."
Despite the winning margin, September was measured in his assessment of Madagascar, acknowledging that the opposition kept the ball alive effectively and stayed competitive for the full 80 minutes. "They were good at the breakdown and that is an area we need to look at before we play Uganda," he said.
Six debutants featured in the win, all of whom September said met expectations on their first appearance. Team selection for the Uganda match will be confirmed once the medical staff have assessed any injuries and niggles from the opening fixture.
In the day's other match, Kenya beat Uganda 43-10.
