SA Rugby president Mark Alexander has expressed condolences following the death of former SA Schools prop Luqobo 'Bibo' Makwedini, who passed away during a training session with French club Béziers late last week. He was 20, having turned 20 on 30 June.
Makwedini represented Western Province XV at the 2023 FNB U18 Craven Week before earning selection for both the SA Schools and SA U18 'A' squads in 2024. His U18 'A' cohort included several players who have since progressed to the Junior Springboks — among them Luan Giliomee, Hendré Schoeman, Alzeadon Felix, Samuel Badenhorst, Risima Khosa, Liam van Wyk, Jordan Jooste and Oliver Reid.
"On behalf of the entire SA Rugby family, we mourn the untimely passing of Luqobo Makwedini during a training session with his club in France," Alexander said. "A former SA U18 prop of immense promise, he had a clear potential for higher honours, as evidenced by his dedication and talent."
Alexander also used the statement to urge coaches and players to take extra precautions during the current European heatwave, noting that the tragedy served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding health and well-being in extreme conditions.
"Bibo's spirit and contribution will remain an enduring part of our rugby family. May he rest in peace."
