Leinster head coach Leo Cullen has confirmed that RG Snyman will remain at the province for the 2026/27 season, extending his stay in Irish rugby despite suffering a third ACL injury — this time to his right knee — in Leinster's 38-17 defeat to Glasgow Warriors on 21 March.
The lock's initial one-year deal had already been extended after he established himself as a key figure following his move from Munster, making 14 appearances in his first season at Leinster. The IRFU sanctioned the further extension, satisfied that his presence does not impede the development of young Irish second-row prospects.
"He'll be around next year," Cullen confirmed ahead of their URC Round 17 clash with the Lions, citing Snyman's value beyond the physical. "It is not just the physical side, but the mentality he has... His experience at the top end of the game, having won two World Cups — what is not to like about that? It is also how open he is with the players, how he interacts with the young players and the senior internationals whom he has played against."
Cullen also ruled out signing another New Zealander to replace Rieko Ioane, noting that Kiwis with international ambitions are unlikely to be available in a World Cup year.
For the Springboks, the timing of Snyman's injury is deeply concerning. With a recovery window of six to twelve months, the 50-cap lock will miss the Nations Championship Tests against England, Wales and Italy in July as well as the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry Series against the All Blacks in August and September. The injury — his previous two ACL tears were to his left knee — casts uncertainty over his availability for South Africa's 2026 Test season entirely.
Snyman and his wife Saskia this week announced they are expecting their first child.
