All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has ended speculation surrounding Richie Mo'unga's availability for next month's high-profile series against the Springboks, confirming the playmaker will not be selected for the tour.
Mo'unga, who orchestrated New Zealand's attack at the last two World Cups, has been out of contention since departing for Japan in 2023. Despite returning home and signing a contract through to next year's World Cup, the 32-year-old remains ineligible until October under New Zealand Rugby's strict rules requiring a season in the domestic provincial competition.
Rennie revealed on Thursday he had accepted the governing body's stance after attempting to secure an exception for the August tour. "He won't be coming on that tour, so we'll squash that," Rennie said. "Under the current rule, he needs to play NPC and we'll have already named our squad prior to that."
The coach confirmed Mo'unga could only join the touring party as an injury replacement for another fly-half. "If a 10 got injured, then Richie's an option for us to bring in," Rennie said. "But for now he'll just get back and play and get himself in great nick so if he gets an opportunity to come to Africa, he's ready to go."
Rennie said he required no proof of Mo'unga's readiness for international rugby, having observed him whilst coaching a rival club in Japan. "I got to see him first hand in Japan in the last three years where he's been phenomenal," he said.
New Zealand will face the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls before the opening test in Johannesburg on 22 August.
