Zach Porthen says the demands of scrummaging in Springbok training sessions have been among the most formative experiences of his young Test career, with the 23-year-old prop named on the replacements bench for Saturday's Nations Championship opener against England at Ellis Park.
Porthen, who earned all three of his previous Test caps during the November tour, has made an impression on Springbok coaches with his ability to pack down on both sides of the scrum — versatility he says he is fully committed to developing.
"It's almost safe to say that a scrum session at the Boks is tougher than what you'd expect in a game," Porthen said. "Ox, Boan and all of the players are absolute beasts, and it's different every time you scrum against them. They are all different, so you learn a different skill each time."
Beyond the technical demands, Porthen highlighted the mental conditioning required in those sessions. "You have to be switched on every single time. Being able to go into that dark place is something I've learned a lot from in this environment."
On his cross-position versatility, the former Junior Springbok captain was unequivocal. "If a coach comes to me and asks for it, I'll say yes if it gets me in the team, especially if it's what's best for the side. I'm all for it."
Porthen acknowledged England will bring familiar physicality and organisation to Ellis Park. "History shows it's never an easy game. They are coming here this weekend, well organised, so it's going to be a difficult match."
The squad had Thursday off before returning to the field for Friday's captains' run. Kick-off on Saturday is at 17h40.
