Yonela Ngxingolo becomes only the second Springbok Women's player to reach 50 Test caps when South Africa face Ireland in the WXV Global Series at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, following Nolusindiso Booi who reached the milestone earlier in 2025. The prop will lead the team onto the field as a ceremonial captain before taking her place on the bench.
The occasion carries added weight as Ireland's first visit to South African soil. The only previous meeting between the sides was a 37-0 Irish win in a 2006 Women's Rugby World Cup pool match in Canada — when the Bok Women were just three years into their existence as a programme.
Ngxingolo, who made her debut against Wales in Cardiff in 2018, is clear-eyed about where South Africa now stands. "They do start as favourites as they are ranked better than us, but we are playing at home and we are in good form following our recent tour to Europe," she said after captain's run. "Tomorrow they will feel us for the first time."
A win would push South Africa to a new high of eighth in the world rankings, or ninth at minimum, depending on results elsewhere — specifically whether Scotland and Italy lose to Australia and USA for a second successive weekend.
Jakkie Cilliers is closing in on another milestone of her own, sitting on 176 Test points from 29 Tests and needing 24 to become only the second Bok Women's player after Libbie Janse van Rensburg to reach 200. Cilliers leads the team's 2026 points scoring chart with 75 points, including three tries.
For Ngxingolo, Athlone Stadium holds particular meaning. "Last year I scored a try against the Black Ferns XV and looking at that spot now, I still recall every second of it," she said. She also counts the win over Italy last year — which secured South Africa's quarter-final berth at the 2025 World Cup — among her career highlights.
"We are really coming together as a team," she added. "We trained well, we have plans to execute and most importantly, we trust each other on the field."
