Jayden Nell joined the Springbok Sevens set-up straight out of school in 2023, but a succession of injuries restricted the former Hoërskool Durbanville prodigy to just two appearances for the Springbok Sevens 'A' side in the Rugby Africa Sevens Cup in Mauritius across 2024 and 2025. The 22-year-old finally made his breakthrough in 2026, debuting at the HSBC SVNS New York — where South Africa claimed their fourth title in six tournaments — and has now made four consecutive tournament appearances.
The Blitzboks lead the HSBC SVNS World Championship race heading into this weekend's tournament in France, and Nell has embraced his role as a forward in the sevens format despite playing as an outside back in fifteens. He scored his first international try against Spain in last weekend's quarter-final in Valladolid, though the tense nature of the late South African rally meant there was little time for celebration.
"We know what to do, and it all boils down to how we play together as a team," Nell said. "We have seen this year that if the guys do that, we are a tough team to beat. It did feel a bit surreal in the beginning, and I am still pinching myself at times, but then, I have been around the guys for a while now, so it was just a matter of doing what the coaches expect of you and doing your bit."
Nell acknowledged that he only registered his maiden try when reviewing match footage afterwards, such was the intensity of the quarter-final. The rookie forward remains determined to contribute as the Blitzboks chase another world championship title with one tournament remaining.
