Vusi Moyo will make his first Test start at flyhalf when the Springboks face Wales in the Nations Championship Round Three clash at Kings Park on Saturday, one of four debutants named in the starting XV.
The 20-year-old's rise has been rapid. A product of King Edward VII School, Moyo matriculated in 2024 and played a key role in South Africa's 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship triumph before making his Sharks URC debut against Zebre in May. His Springbok introduction came off the bench against the Barbarians at Nelson Mandela Stadium weeks later, kicking the final conversion in the 80-31 win.
Moyo has identified the pace of Test rugby as the primary adjustment required at this level. "The only thing about the Springboks set-up is that it's much quicker. You have to make decisions a lot quicker," he told reporters.
He will partner Cobus Reinach at halfback on Saturday, and the experienced personnel around him has made the transition easier. Moyo's first memory of Reinach is the scrumhalf's hat-trick against Canada at the 2019 World Cup — a reminder of how quickly the young flyhalf has closed the gap between admirer and teammate.
Moyo counts Handré Pollard, Manie Libbok and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu as his primary influences, and both Pollard and Libbok have worked directly with him during the week's preparations. "Handré and Manie have actually been helping me with my game this week," he said. "Whatever they tell me to do, I'll just do it."
Erasmus has publicly backed Moyo to have the attributes to succeed at Test level.
