Chuma Isaac, the 19-year-old Madibaz loose forward, captained the South African U20 Women's side in two fixtures against the United States in Stellenbosch, marking another significant step in a career that is accelerating rapidly.

Isaac, who grew up in Motherwell and studies inventory and stores management at Mandela University, had already skippered the Eastern Province U20 side before earning the national armband — a selection she describes as unexpected.

"I always wanted to make the team because it is one step towards my dream, but I didn't think I would," she said. "When I heard I had been selected, I was very surprised and grateful."

The Baby Boks were unable to get the results against a US side that consistently moved the ball wide at pace, but Isaac drew encouragement from the manner in which her team competed. "It was a beautiful experience. Yes, we didn't win, but I loved the way we played. My teammates never gave up and we kept fighting until the end."

Isaac identifies line-breaking as her primary on-field contribution, and says executing that role effectively gives her the confidence to lead those around her.

Madibaz Sport rugby manager Siphesihle Jobo believes the national environment is fast-tracking her development. "She is being exposed to advanced coaching and competes against the best players in her age group. The fact that she was also chosen as captain says a great deal about her maturity and the confidence the national coaches have in her leadership."

Jobo also hopes Isaac's trajectory serves as proof to other Eastern Cape players that top-level opportunities do not require a move away from the province.
