Bongi Mbonambi's absence from the Sharks' first three URC rounds this season stems from a disciplinary matter rather than injury, according to Rapport. The 82-Test hooker is awaiting the outcome of a hearing into his conduct during the Sharks' pre-season team-building camp at a game reserve, where he reportedly breached rules set by head coach JP Pietersen governing socialising on one of the evenings.

Trevor Nyakane, Fez Mbatha and Eduan Swart were also implicated in the incident. Nyakane appears to have been excused on the basis that he was not present when Pietersen outlined the camp rules, while Mbatha and Swart received written warnings after apologising for their behaviour. Mbonambi's case has proceeded to a formal hearing, with the presiding officer expected to deliver findings within the next two weeks.

The 35-year-old has not featured for the Springboks since last year due to injuries, and the disciplinary cloud now adds further uncertainty to his immediate future at the Sharks.
