Bongi Mbonambi has left the Sharks by mutual agreement and signed a one-year contract with the Stormers, returning to the Cape franchise where he earned 74 caps between 2015 and 2021.
The Sharks confirmed the split was reached on amicable terms following constructive discussions between both parties. CEO Shaun Bryans thanked Mbonambi for his contribution to the club and wished him well, while reaffirming the franchise's focus on the current season under head coach JP Pietersen.
Mbonambi is available for selection immediately and is set to feature in the Stormers' URC clash with Ulster at DHL Stadium on Saturday. His arrival comes at a critical time for the Cape side, with hookers André-Hugo Venter, Deon Fourie, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Almero Keizer and Luca Bakkes all injured and JJ Kotzé serving a suspension.
Director of Rugby John Dobson said the deal was arranged at short notice and that Mbonambi would slot straight into the squad this week. Mbonambi, who established himself as a Springbok while at the Stormers in his first stint, said he was eager to contribute to a club he described as being "in a great space".
